Reducing Common Health Risks in Women

Ways to Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer

Patient Education, Women's Health

While genetics and family history often play a large role in determining your risks for certain diseases, there are many steps you can take and ways that you can reduce your health risks, including your risk for developing the leading causes of death for women in the United States.

#1 LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH: HEART DISEASE
The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions, most commonly coronary artery disease, which can cause heart attack. Other kinds of heart disease may involve the valves in the heart, or the heart may not pump well and cause heart failure.

How to lower your risk:
  • Don’t smoke
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Choose a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Exercise regularly
  • Prevent and treat other health conditions, especially high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes

#2 LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH: CANCER
Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death for women in the U.S. with lung cancer being the most common cause of cancer deaths, followed by breast cancer, then colorectal cancer.

How to lower your risk:
  • Don’t smoke
  • Choose a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Limit alcohol intake to less than 1 alcoholic beverage per day

Additional ways you can lower your risk of LUNG cancer:
  • Limit exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Lower your exposure to workplace toxins such as asbestos, arsenic, chromium, nickel, beryllium, cadmium, tar, and soot

Additional ways you can lower your risk of BREAST cancer:
  • Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy

Additional ways you can lower your risk of COLORECTAL cancer:
  • Obtain a regular colorectal cancer screening
