10 Truths of IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

General, Men's Health, Mental Health, Prevention

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder that can cause various symptoms, including abdominal pain/discomfort and altered bowel habits such as diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, increased gas production, and cramping. The effects of IBS vary from person to person. Symptoms may come and go and range from mildly irritating sensations in some to more severe and persistent issues affecting functional ability, sleep, and overall quality of life.

10 TRUTHS ABOUT IBS ARE:

  • 1. IBS is a chronic condition, but it does not change, damage, or physically alter the structure of the intestines.
  • 2. The vast majority of people can learn to manage the symptoms in order to lead a normal, active, healthy life. Strategies are multifactorial and include diet, behavioral and lifestyle changes, medications, and stress reduction techniques.
  • 3. IBS symptoms are real and can be exacerbated by high levels of psychological stress.
  • 4. Treatments for IBS are personalized, as what works best for one patient may not work as well for another patient.
  • 5. Certain foods may worsen symptoms, including lactose-containing products such as milk, cheese, and ice cream; processed, commercially prepared, and healthy foods high in fructose; carbonated beverages, caffeine, and sugar-free chewing gums, spicy foods, or fermentable foods.
  • 6. Symptoms will diagnose IBS once other diseases have been excluded. There is no single or specific test available to establish IBS diagnosis.
  • 7. Both men, women, and even children may be affected by IBS, yet it is more prevalent in women. Two in three people affected by IBS are women, whereas one in three are men. In the United States, between 25 and 45 million have IBS.
  • 8. A patient with IBS does not have a higher risk of colorectal cancer, as IBS does not cause inflammation. A key factor in colorectal cancer risk is inflammation.
  • 9. Managing the symptoms often involves making lifestyle changes that diminish or lessen the symptoms and prevent flare-ups.
  • 10. Numerous treatment options are available, including a wide variety of prescription medications along with evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.

An awareness of these truths about IBS can give people confidence and control in managing IBS symptoms.
